Abstract

This research will be focused on English reading proficiency. Nowadays, this skill is very important because it helps people to master the language, and it helps them to improve other skills. Reading proficiency can be achieved only if there is a strong vocabulary base. Curtis (1987) claims that students’ ability to acquire new knowledge could be affected if they have low vocabulary knowledge. Therefore, reading proficiency depends on the students’ vocabulary size. When learning a new language, there are many positive and negative things that students need to overcome many obstacles, but it is important to mention that there a lot of techniques and strategies that students can use in order to learn more about the language. The Foreign Language Department of the University of El Salvador prepares students to become proficient in all the skills, and in this case, the university prepares students to become highly proficient in reading; it means that students are able to manage the skill efficiently, based on the Readings and Conversation I and II syllabi
